Tevin Campbell to perform in SA again

AMERICAN rhythm & blues star Tevin Campbell is due to return to South Africa next month.

"I'm so excited to be coming back to South Africa as a grown man for my second tour," the singer said.

The 36-year-old musician is expected in South Africa late next month to perform at three concerts in Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Gauteng.

Since the release of his debut album T.E.V.I.N in 1991, which went platinum, and I'm Ready, which reached Top 5 on the R&B charts, he has been quiet.

"After a busy life of travelling, performing, doing interviews and rehearsals since the age of 13, I made a conscious decision to take a break from the music industry," he explains.

About his long absence from live performances, Campbell has this to say: "Just as I was still thinking on how to regroup and come back into the music game, the Broadway Hairspray show happened and I performed there for six solid years, and in the show I played Seaweed J Stubbs."

Asked if he remembered any highlights from his first trip to South Africa in 1999, Campbell said he was simply too young to remember all that happened, but vaguely recalls rehearsing all the time.

"This time around I'm looking forward to going on a safari and exploring the beautiful city of Cape Town, as I've heard so much about it. I also want to go out to a nightclub and explore the night life and the beautiful ladies," he giggled.

Campbell performs at the Boardwalk Casino in Port Elizabeth on July 24, at the Grand Arena Grandwest in Cape Town on July 27 and at Carnival City in Boksburg on July 28. - motaud@sowetan.co.za
