Mob justice: 6 get bail for savage beating

A woman lay naked and bleeding on the ground while a mob stoned and also beat her with sticks.

"She's not dead! She's not dead, kill her," the mob shouted as they continued to rain blows on her.

Yesterday, suspects arrested for this savage beating that was captured on a cellphone camera appeared in the Sekgosese Magistrate's Court.

The woman in the video was also in court as a state witness. The case was postponed to April 29 for further investigations.

The accused, Moses Mokoena, Molantwa Mokwena, Chaisa Sethegi, Samuel Makgesi, Queen Raphahlelo and Patrick Mokoena, were all granted R500 bail each.

They are facing a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The attack took place at Sekgosese, near Modjadjiskloof last month.

In the video, Selina Monakhisi of Roerfontein is seen lying on the ground while villagers took turns stoning her.

She was also beaten repeatedly with sticks.

The attack was triggered by the death of another woman, in the neighbouring GaRaphahlelo village, believed to have been poisoned when drinking a traditional brew.

In the video, the villagers accused Monakhisi, who is from GaRaphahlelo, of poisoning the deceased. It is alleged that she was seen sharing the brew with the deceased earlier on.

Seeking revenge for the alleged poisoning of their loved one, the deceased's family led the attack against the woman in the video.

Villagers said she was first paraded in the streets of the village before she was dragged to the deceased's homestead where the beating took place.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Mphalelwa Mashao said police received a tip-off and went to the scene where they found the woman lying on the ground, naked. They rushed her to hospital.
