Now the Democratic Alliance (DA) wants the ruling party “to do the residents of Makana Municipality the same favour by relieving them of their ghost mayor”‚ Zamuxolo Peter.
The reshuffle in Buffalo City‚ Business Day reported at the weekend‚ came weeks after the ANC effected drastic leadership changes in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro where they replaced mayor Ben Fihla with soccer administrator Danny Jordaan amid infighting and administrative instability in that council.
The DA in a statement on Thursday‚ however‚ preferred to describe the ANC deployments as a “cosmetic anti-corruption crusade”.
The opposition party said it welcomes the recent announcement of an investigation into a “ghost employees” scandal in Makana‚ but added that “it is the mayor that has become the number one ghost employee of Makana as nobody is quite sure what he is being paid to do”.
The DA said “Peter has presided over the collapse of Makana since he was elected in 2011” – during which time the metro was placed under administration as it “could no longer meet its financial obligations and service delivery had ground to a halt”.
Should the ANC fire Peter‚ the DA said it would “not rejoice”.
“We must ask why it has taken them so long. Why has the ANC allowed things to get so bad before taking action? The ANC must not be rewarded for doing the right thing. This is what they are expected to do‚” the DA said.
