French authorities launched a nationwide hunt for a young woman suspected of snatching a baby from a maternity ward.
The boy named Zacharia was born last Friday and was taken Monday between 10 pm and midnight as his mother slept beside him, said officials at Saint-Joseph hospital in the Mediterranean port of Marseille.
Police were looking for a young woman of Mediterranean or north African appearance who was seen acting suspiciously in the private hospital on Monday evening, local prosecutor Jacques Dallest told AFP.
French authorities launched a nationwide kidnap alert appealing for information on the baby and its abductor, using radio, television and Internet messages and information boards in train and bus stations and on motorways.
Said and Nadia Meddah, the child's parents who are both Algerians living in Marseille, appealed for help.
"All I want is to see my son again," the father told reporters.
The hospital's maternity ward is the biggest in the region, and sees an average of 4,000 births a year.
