Goldfish from China

GOLDFISH are small, colourful fish that are related to carp. When found in nature, most of them are green or brown, though some are gold.

Goldfish were originally found in China, mainly in rivers, lakes and ponds. The Chinese liked the gold-coloured fish so much they began to breed them for their garden ponds.

The fish then found their way to Japan and eventually Europe in the 18th century.

If goldfish find their way back to rivers, lakes and ponds their offspring lose their gold colour and become the green and brown of their ancestors.
