Stimela back on track

STIMELA has kicked off the festive season with a new album A Life Time. This marks their return after a hiatus of 14 years and the loss of one of their founding members, Nana Coyote, in July this year.

A Life Time was launched last night at the Market Theatre in Newtown. After taking a very long recess Stimela, comprising Ray Phiri, Isaac Mtshali, Jabu, Lloyd Lelosa, Bafana Khuzwayo and Thapelo Kgomo, will rock the festive season with new sounds.

Stimela last recorded an album in 1996 titled Out of the Ashes. But the group has since released a compilation and two live CDs.

On their 16th album they collaborated with Thandiswa Mazwai, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Bakiti Khumalo.

Speaking during a live interview on Radio 2000, Ray Phiri said the latest album was different because it tackled life issues directly.

"It questions a lot of things. It encourages a lifetime conversation. The songs do not beg to be heard, they are not pretentious, they float with an optimism that says those who dare to dream will find their way."

The group's return was welcomed by many followers, who called in during the live show. Phiri, who regards Stimela as an institution, said they got a lifeline through Tumi Mokoena, who owns TM Productions. He said Mokoena persuaded them to record another album.
