Mabanga's death a loss to the arts

CONDOLENCES are pouring in for the dead actor Selby Mabanga, who made a name for himself in the 1990s in the SABC1 drama Ubambo Lwami.

His family said on Tuesday Mabanga had regained his health and had started sorting out things - preparing to go back to work.

He died on Tuesday at his family home in KwaMashu.

His distraught mother, Thembekile Mabanga, said he was anxious to go back to work after having been in and out of hospitals.

He was in Johannesburg last week and returned home on Saturday.

Mabanga played Bafo in the once popular drama Ubambo Lwami. Besides acting he was over the years involved in hosting a number of entertainment events, including the Divas concert.

He was editor and founder of the educational magazine called School Talk.

He got married last year in a magistrate's court and had planned to have a bigger white wedding later once he had regained his health.

Roland Mqwebu, who played Mkhize in the local drama series Emzini Wezinsizwa, expressed shock and a sense of loss for the industry.

"I once worked with him as a guest actor in Emzini Wezinsizwa. He was one of the country's most talented actors," Mqwebu said.

Department of arts and culture MEC Weziwe Thusi said she was saddened by the passing of Mabanga.

He will be buried on Saturday after a service at Kingdom Hall at K-section in KwaMashu at 10am.
