TV music show host and YFM DJ Mo Flava has just released his second house music album called House of Flava 2, featuring the hit Xivumba.

He has defended the growing trend of DJs releasing albums, saying they have as much right as anyone else to earn a living.

Speaking to Sowetan, Mo Flava said his album was local in every respect as he had used local music and local producers.

"I made a conscious decision to go local with this new album. I used local material and local skills so that everyone involved could benefit - from the producers to musicians whose compositions I have re-arranged.

"I am aware of people complaining that DJs must not release compilation albums, but my answer is that they should because that is the nature of the industry. If you have what it takes and the market likes your stuff, go for it.

"Besides, when musicians - and there is an increasing number of them - act in television soapies, professional actors do not complain that these musicians are taking bread from their mouths.

"Why should it be different when DJs do the same," argued Mo Flava.

The host of a popular YFM breakfast show and co-host of e.tv's popular music show Club 808 - which he co-hosts with Dineo Ranaka - said House of Flava 2 was more mature compared to his debut album.

Mo Flava said American entertainers were a good example of how one seized opportunities in the entertainment industry.

"The question then is, why can't we do the same in South Africa?" he asked.

Mo Flava is normally behind the microphone at the YFM weekdays between 6am and 9am where he hosts Flava in the Morning. If he is not at YFM studios, he hosts Club 808 on e.tv on Fridays.

"I actually get more busy during weekends. I spin discs at night clubs every weekend," he said.

A media studies graduate, Mo Flava said education was very important. "It gives one the confidence to do what they love while earning a living."
