Images of Nigerian culture

SEASONED Nigerian photographer Okhai Ojeikere kick-starts the visual arts calender with a mind-blowing retrospective exhibition at Gallery Momo in Johannesburg.

Titled Sartorial Moments and the Nearness of Yesterday, the exhibition starts on February 3.

It features images of modernity and nationalism through fashion.

Born in Nigeria, Ojeikere is famous for using his lens to document cultural trends in Nigeria and elsewhere.

His photographs show the many changes in style over time.

Ojeikere, who celebrated his 80th birthday last year, focuses on hairstyles of the 60s and 70s.

But in this exhibition, with curators Bisi Silva, Monna Mokoena and Foto, Ojeikere' s intention is to remind the public that, like Malick Sidibe of Mali, he also recorded the fashion of the independence era .

Photographs that will be on display will feature a variety of Nigerian and Western fashions, with their ubiquitous hairstyles and head-ties.

Silva says the exhibition will celebrate the various periods of Nigeria's cultural history as well as mark the country's Golden Jubilee.

"In addition, the exhibition will also celebrate 60 years of innovative photographic practice for the master photographer, who is affectionately known as Pa Ojeikere," Silva says.

Ojeikere began his career in Abakaliki, Nigeria's Ebonyi State, in 1950. He has more than 5000 photographs in his archives. His images of hairstyles, such asOnilegogoro, have acquired iconic status.

Ojeikere opted for fashion and trends because he always tried to understand society and to map cultural dimensions. His choice of projects usually reflects the interests and the constraints of communities as they change.

Ojeikere's work has been exhibited in many countries of the world, including France, Japan, Switzerland, Spain and Belgium.

Sartorial Moments and the Nearness of Yesterday runs until March 28.
