Nxumalo set to succeed Mlaba as Durban mayor

ETHEKWINI municipality speaker and provincial SA Communist Party chairperson James Nxumalo is expected to be mayor after the May local government elections.

Though the ANC is tight-lipped about mayor Obed Mlaba's replacement, speculation is rife that Nxumalo is a strong contender.

Mlaba, 67, has been mayor since 1999 and Nxumalo became speaker of the council in 2005.

The ANC's provincial working committee (PWC) met on Sunday to discuss the nomination of councillors for the elections and is responsible for nominating mayors.

Provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala was not available for comment yesterday because he was attending meetings and Nxumalo did not answer his phone.

But an ANC source said: "Nxumalo is almost definite to take over the position. He has all the necessary capabilities for mayor. He stands out as a good leader and he understands local government well.

"Had the ANCnot been busy with deploying councillors, this would have been made public by now."

Nxumalo was elected ANC councillor in 1996 and again in 2000.
