Public protector to probe mayor

PUBLIC Protector Thuli Madonsela is to investigate allegations that Tshwane mayor Kgosientsho Ramokgopa abused his authority and used state funds and resources to campaign for re-election as chairperson of the ANC's Tshwane region.

Ramokgopa has been accused of appointing a 30-person team to work from his office to canvass support for him in preparations for the ANC's Tshwane regional conference, which took place in Pretoria over the weekend.

Ramokgopa beat ANC Women's League member Jacky Mofokeng by 472 votes to 73.

Prior to this weekend's conference, a group of employees at the Tshwane metro municipality's supply chain management and legal services department asked the public protector, the Special Investigations Unit and the municipality's speaker, Morakane Mosupye, to investigate allegations of corruption and mismanagement against Ramokgopa.

They also asked for investigations into alleged misconduct against other officials who are seen as his "loyalists".

Momelezi Kula, an executive manager in the public protector's office, confirmed that Madonsela would investigate the claims.

"The mayor will be advised of the investigation by public protector when she returns to office (this week)," he said.

Meanwhile, Ramokgopa's re-election was not without controversy. He was elected at one of the parallel conferences held at theweekend.

ANC members in the Tshwane region elected two sets of leaders at two separate conferences.

His election came about as a result of the merger of the Tshwane and Metsweding regions.

The new Tshwane region is now the third largest ANC region in the country. The two municipalities were merged following the May local government elections.

The second "parallel conference" was held at the Justice College and represented about 46 branches, according to newly elected secretary Joel Mphahla, a member of the party's Centurion branch.

At this event, Mafika Mahlangu was elected chairperson on Saturday night.

Dingiswayo Santos Matshika was elected deputy chairperson, Mphahla was secretary, Thapelo Rantho was deputy secretary and Heminah Tebogo Monaanyane was treasurer.

According to Mphahla, a total of 268 people attended this election.

Mphahla said the branches held their own conference after various problems, such as party members not being allowed to vote, or being barred from meetings, were not addressed by the provincial ANC.
