Website honouring Free State icons to be launched

IN WHAT is deemed a first in South Africa, a website that is aimed at honouring and acknowledging Free State-born icons who excelled in their careers will be launched soon.

The website will profile icons, heroes and heroines, past and present, who have done well in sports, entertainment, business and politics, among others

Freestateicons.co.za is the brainchild of budding entrepreneur Shaxe Khumalo, who is a radio presenter, motivational speaker, MC, club DJ and chief executive of Shaxe Khumalo Events and Promotions.

Khumalo said the website was aimed at inspiring the youth to be whatever they wanted, irrespective of their backgrounds.

He said: "Young people often made excuses, like a lack of funds, for not pursuing their dreams.

"But if they could go through the website and read about people who made it, they would learn that one can be successful despite one's poor upbringing.

"We are trying to make the information about Free State-born icons readily available for the benefit of the people."

Khumalo said the people of Free State were often under the impression that some of the icons they often saw in the media were from other provinces, particularly Gauteng.

"But we want to inform them that they are actually from Free State," he said.

"Take, for instance, Mark Shuttleworth, who is from Welkom the in Free State. Not many people know that."

He also said the website would create employment for a number of young people.

He said: "We will be creating about 10 permanent posts for youths in the Free State for now. We would require graphic designers, web designers, researchers, journalists and other staff who would be able to sustain the website.

"Free State is one province that has never received the recognition it deserved, so we want people to know that the province has the potential to produce contributors, not only in South Africa but the entire world."

Some of the people who have made it to the website include businessman Mark Shuttleworth, self-made millionaire Kenny "Sushi King" Kunene, comedian David Kau, Free State Premier Ace Magashule, former premier Winkie Direko, actor and director Tony Kgoroge, former Generations star Fana Mokoena, life president of Bloemfontein Celtic Petrus Molemela, UK-based soccer star Kagisho Dikgacoi, Free State Stars coach Steve Khompela, among others.

"All these people have made such a huge contribution in their careers and deserve to be acknowledged," Khumalo said.

He said that even ordinary people would be honoured on the website.

"There are people who work behind the scenes and are the unsung heroes. They will also be on the website and be honoured," said Khumalo.

He appealed to the private sector and the government to come on board and assist in creating jobs for the young people in Free State.

"This would benefit both the government in their quest to create jobs for the young people," he said.
