A GERMISTON woman has described how her boyfriend was allegedly beaten to a pulp by police in front of her before he died of his injuries in hospital two days later.
Rose Marakalala said she was with her boyfriend, Mike Mokoena, last Wednesday when seven policemen stormed into her house and startedassaulting him.
Mokoena died two days later in the Natalspruit Hospital.
"Before he came to my house, Mike had had an argument with his sibling.
"After Mike had left the sibling's house, he (sibling) called the police and claimed he had pointed a firearm at him," Marakalala said.
"The police and the sibling, came to my house. The sibling pointed at Mike and told police he was the one who had pointed a firearm at him.
"The policemen then started beating and kicking Mike, demanding that he produce the firearm.
"They beat him for about an hour before telling him to wash the blood from his body. They then put him into a police van and drove away."
Marakalala said her boyfriend appeared in court two days later but was released on R500 bail.
"He was still in pain and we rushed him to Cruywagen Hospital in Germiston. He was transferred to Natalspruit Hospital where he died," she said.
Marakalala has laid criminal charges at Germiston police station against the officers.
Captain Puleng Tshabalala of the Germiston police confirmed the incident and said the case had been referred to the Independent Complaints Directorate for investigation.
Tshabalala said the police officers were still at work.
Mokoena, who hailed from QwaQwa in the Free State, left behind a three-year-old child, Palesa.
"I am worried about her future because I am unemployed. Her father was taking good care of her," she said.
Mokoena's brother, Mohapi, said the family wanted justice.
"We hope the policemen who did this to Mike get arrested and rot in jail," he said.
