Miner dies at Mponeng gold mine

A miner was killed and two others were injured during a fall of ground at the Mponeng mine near Carletonville, AngloGold Ashanti said.

"A development construction team member was fatally injured in a fall of ground incident at approximately 4.15am [Wednesday]," company spokesman Alan Fine said.

The two injured miners were in stable condition in hospital. The mineral resources department was contacted and an on-site inspection carried out. Activities to try and access ore-bearing rock had been stopped.

"Other operations on the mine are continuing."

In September last year, a shaft timberman with 33 years of service to the company was killed in a mud rush at the same mine. In August last year, an electrician was electrocuted at the mine while inspecting and testing a mini substation.
