ANC commends public on ‘vocal engagement on finance minister’

President Jacob Zuma’s decision to appoint Pravin Gordhan as minister of finance “is an explicit demonstration of a responsive and accountable government”‚ the African National Congress (ANC) claimed.

The proclamation on Sunday of Gordhan’s return to the position five days after his successor Nhlanhla Nene was controversially dumped by Zuma and replaced with unknown ANC MP David van Rooyen was condemned across the political spectrum.

The party took the opportunity to commend “the public for vocal engagement of government on the appointment of the minister of finance”.

“As an organisation‚ the ANC values public activism on matters of public interest‚” said spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.

“Public concern around the appointment of the finance minister demonstrated the value our nation has attached to past deployment by president Zuma’s administration and an involved‚ concerned and activist citizenry on the future of our economy.

“This decision has been occasioned by public concern stressing the need for experience and market assurance on the person who will champion the finance and fiscal policy of the country.”

Kodwa said the ANC‚ which many reported as being were unaware of Zuma’s axing of Nene or the the reasons behind it‚ “appreciates the explanation provided by president Zuma on the reasons behind the initial reshuffle of Comrade Nhlanhla Nene who is the country’s nominee to serve as head of the African Regional Centre of the New Development Bank/Brics Bank”.

Kodwa’s statement wished “all the deployees well in their new tasks”‚ but notably did not mention Van Rooyen‚ nor that he would assume Gordhan’s role as minister in the Presidency for co-operative governance and traditional affairs.
