Tightening up on debit orders on social grants

The Department of Social Development is in the process of amending the social grant regulations that will be stricter on debit orders going off the social grant accounts.

The new regulations that seek to do away with multiple debit orders on social grant funds will only allow one debit order for funeral insurance or scheme per social grant account.

The deductions from the social grant account for funeral policies will only be permissible if the beneficiary submits a request in writing to the South African Social Security Agency.

No deductions will be allowed on child grants‚ care dependency grants child support or social grants.

Once the amendments are published the beneficiaries of these social grants will not be allowed to have debit orders come off their SASSA accounts and will be granted three months to make alternative arrangements.

The department of social development has gazetted the regulations calling for comments on the amendments.
