Cops nab 'mastermind' behind R6.8m education dept. fraud

The Gauteng Hawks’ Specialised Commercial Crime Investigation Unit has nabbed the mastermind behind a “ghost employees” scam that cost the provincial education department an estimated R5 million‚ Hawks spokesperson Ndivhuwo Molamu said on Monday.

Mulamu‚ in a statement‚ said human resource practitioner Kenneth Maredi Mothiang‚ 34‚ was also linked to financial and internet fraud in which the department suffered losses amounting to a further R1.8 million between 2014 and 2015.

“Mothiang was arrested at his hiding place in Centurion on Thursday last week. He briefly appeared before the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Friday for fraud‚” said Mulamu.

Mothiang was remanded in custody and his case postponed to August 5 for a formal bail application. More arrests were expected shortly.

The department of education is yet to comment.
