A man allegedly dressed as a policeman was killed in a shootout with real police officers in Edenvale‚ Johannesburg on Monday morning.

Police spokeswoman Sharon Tsotsotso said details of the incident were sketchy but that‚ “police officers are currently on the scene to collect full information“.

“But according to information provided to me at the moment it is believed two men who were dressed as police officers were stopped and questioned by police in the area‚” Tsotsotso said.

When pressed‚ one of them tried to flee‚ firing at the police as he did so.

“A shootout ensued resulting in one of the men being fatally wounded‚” Tsotsotso said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the incident happened at a retail centre in Edenvale.

“ER24 Paramedics‚ along with another private service‚ arrived on the scene and found a light motor vehicle in the parking area surrounded by a heavy police presence. On inspection‚ paramedics found the man lying next to his vehicle‚” Meiring said.

“Assessment showed that the man had sustained a gunshot wound to his head and his abdomen and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately‚ nothing could be done for the man and he was declared dead on the scene.”
