Rising KZN promoter soldiers on

BUDDING boxing promoter Thulani Magudulela will be left with a big hole in his pocket after staging a boxing tournament at Albert Park in Durban on Saturday, but he is determined to keep the city on the boxing map.

Magudulela, who comes from Nongoma and is now based in Umlazi, has staged nine events without a sponsor. The good news is no boxer has ever complained about pay.

Godfrey Sangweni, head of department in the provincial department of sport, and mayor Obed Mlaba have always graced Magudulela's tournaments and Saturday's event is expected to be no exception. Their departments are expected to pay for the venue, ambulance, doctors, security and other logistics at the Ludonga Boxing Promotions event.

There will be eight men's and three women's professional fights, plus five amateur fights on the bill.

Topping the bill will be the provincial middleweight title fight between Christopher Buthelezi and Michael Sangweni, scheduled for 10 rounds. Buthelezi has not fought since he was knocked out in two rounds by Khotso Motau in February 2006, while Sangweni fought his heart out against Michael van Heerden last month, only to be denied victory.

The main supporting bout is for the KwaZulu-Natal junior middleweight title between Xolani Mvubu and Malibongwe Ndzube. The action starts at 9am and admission is free.
