Parreira hot tip for Chile job

FORMER Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira could land yet another high-profile job to guide a senior national team, but this time on the continent of South America.

Sowetan has learnt that Parreira heads the list of coaches wanted by the Football Federation of Chile to take up the position of senior national team head coach.

This comes after previous coach Marcelo Bielsa, who led Chile to their first World Cup finals in 12 years, resigned at the weekend.

Bielsa made it clear last week that he would quit if Jorge Segovia won the election for the presidency of the federation.

Segovia, the president of First Division Union Espanola, defeated Harold Mayne-Nicholls, who appointed Bielsa in 2007.

Mayne-Nicholls was also the head of Fifa's inspection team that visited the countries bidding to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Besides Parreira, other possible replacements for Bielsa include Boca Juniors coach Claudio Borghi and former Spanish national team coach Luis Aragones.

A source close to the developments said: "Professor Parreira is the hot favourite at this stage."

Parreira has been unemployed since his contract with Safa expired at the end of the 2010 World Cup in July.
