Pirates storm the ramparts of Golden Arrows

WHILE log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns dropped two valuable points, Orlando Pirates intensified their challenge for the Premiership title

They beat Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-0 at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban.

Pirates were businesslike from the onset, putting Arrows' defence under pressure in search of their first win in 2011 after playing to a 0-0 draw Santos in their opening match.

The first clear-cut chance fell on Isaac Chansa who with only Helton Da Rocha to beat, ballooned his shot over the bar in the 11th minute.

Chansa made up for the earlier miss when he scored in the 28th minute. Pirates, the visitors, started the second half like a house on fire, exerting pressure on the home team.

This paid dividends in the 50th minute when Arrows' star player Siyabonga Sangweni scored an own goal - putting Pirates 2-0 in the lead.

Senzo Meyiwa, who was at Pirates goals after a long break on the bench, pulled a brilliant save from an attempt from Collins Mbesuma six minutes later.

In the 63rd minute, Arrows' keeper Da Rocha stretched all his muscles to deny Ezenwa Otorugu, who was later substituted for Patrick Malokase.

The hosts tried everything to get at least a goal but failed to beat Meyiwa who stood in for the suspended first choice goalie Moeneeb Josephs.

  • In the Free State, Teboho Setena reports that Sundowns drew 1-1 with Bloemfontein Celtic at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium.

Downs finished the game with 10 men after Lebohang "Cheeseboy" Mokoena was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The Brazilians deservedly took the lead in the seventh minute via predatory striker Katlego Mphela's diving header after connecting a brilliant Franklin Cale's cross.

Thokozani Mshengu equalised a minute before the interval, tapping in a neat cross from Moses Spandeel.

  • In Cape Town, Santos beat Vasco Da Gama 1-0 in a Cape Town derby at Athlone Stadium.

Thami Nqolobe reports that Graham King scored the only goal of the match in the 89th minute.
