Masalesa awaits call from Lisbon

YOUNG South African soccer star Lehlogonolo Masalesa is on the verge of furthering his football career in Europe.

The Wits midfielder is being assessed by the technical staff of Sporting Lisbon, one of the soccer giants of Portugal.

"I did well during the trials. The technical staff of Sporting Lisbon have promised to get back to me before the end of the month," said Masalesa, 22. "I have always wanted to play in one of the big soccer leagues in Europe. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

"We have to start sending players to Europe when they are still young, that will benefit Bafana Bafana and other national teams a great deal.

"That is what West African countries are doing."

Masalesa is a graduate of the African Youth Sports Academy, which has produced the likes of Oupa Manyisa, Joseph Molangoane and Mpho Makola. Academy head coach Alfred Malete said: "We are waiting for Sporting Lisbon to come back to us, the report we got is that Viera (Masalesa) performed very well."

Masalesa, who has also been called up by the Bafana Bafana technical staff on two occasions, started his soccer career at Tshiamo Academy in Mankweng.

Big names he played with at the academy in Limpopo include Hlompho Kekana, Tlou Molekwane, Bamose Gololo, Vincent Kobola and Ramahlwe Mphahlele.
