MIKE Ntombela is excited about his return to Mamelodi Sundowns and the role he can play in restoring the fortunes of his beloved club.

The former captain of the club is the new team manager of Sundowns and has taken up a post he describes as "more than just arranging logistics at the heart of the team's fortunes".

Sundowns are seeking to end a five-season drought and approached Ntombela to return to the club that he skippered to their first success in the late 1980s.

"There was only one club I would have been prepared to go back to because of my history with them, so I'm delighted to be at Sundowns," said the ex-fullback, who for years has been the representative and frontline man of former Bafana kit suppliers adidas.

"My role will not be any interfering with the coaching staff but an influential post to take charge of the players and their welfare and to have a stake in the managing of the club.

"Before I took on the role I wanted to make sure I would not just be a drag. I'm determined to contribute as best I can."

Ntombela said the Brazilians can only improve after a disastrous, trophy-less season where they lost out in the late stages of the league title race and in the Nedbank Cup final.
