Kalmer eyes Makhanya in PE race

RENE Kalmer has vowed to stop Soweto's Mapaseka Makhanya from opening up a bigger points gap in the Spar Women's 10km Challenge tomorrow.

The two athletes are among the throngs of runners who will invade Port Elizabeth for the second leg of the series taking place at Pollok Beach.

Makhanya is the Grand Prix leader on 19 points after finishing second in the first leg in Cape Town last month, an event won by Rutendo Nyahora.

The Pretoria-based Nyahora does not qualify for the Grand Prix, of which the prize is a new car, as she is Zimbabwean.

A three-time Grand Prix winner, Kalmer is sitting on 17 points after finishing fourth in Cape Town. She has made it clear she is going to Eastern Cape in a bid to win the race.

"I want to successfully defend my Grand Prix, to win it for a record fourth time, so one has to start winning," she said.

Makhanya said: "I finished second twice in 10km events since I started competing in road running this year, now I want my first road race win."

The Sowetan runner, who competes in the colours of Transnet Club, is fresh from winning the Mauritius International Meet 800m event last Saturday.
